About

Margaret Donovan and Matys Colpron met while studying at McGill University. It was here they explored the rich tradition of jazz while enriching their respective musical experiences through collaboration with a variety of ensembles on select Montreal stages. At university, their cohort proved fruitful. This ensemble represents the next generation of young musicians who dare to create a contemporary identity for the future of Montreal jazz; a distinct identity, less conservative, more creative, more diverse, and above all, with equal representation. Their desire to collaborate quickly manifested itself. Margaret Donovan and Matys Colpron formed their sextet to create a medium to present their original compositions. The ensemble is made up of young Montreal and Canadian talents: Sam Baglieri on tenor saxophone, Charles-Olivier Talbot on trumpet, August McKinney on piano, and Mason Jeffery-Off on double bass. The ensemble's mission is to be inclusive while supporting the representation of this new generation of women composers in jazz. It also aims to be a place for lasting collaboration between Quebecois and Canadian artists. This diversity is represented musically, their various influences explore the virtues of coexistence through improvisation and collaborative conversation during their public instrumental performances.
